Oral Diagnoz’da temel bilimsel çalışmalar dört grupta toplanabilir:

  1. semptomların tanımı
  2. sendromların tanımı
  3. tanı metotları
  4. tanıya götürecek laboratuvar-radyolojik-patolojik uygulamaların/yöntemlerin tespiti.

Ağız kanserleri genel kanser oranları içinde %5′e varan oranda görülür ve erken teşhis için diş hekiminin iyi bir oral diagnoz bilgisine gereksinimi vardır.
