What is Gum Inflammation?

Gum inflammation, medically known as “gingivitis”, is a common disease that causes inflammation in the gums. This condition is usually caused by plaque accumulating at the gum line. It can be easily treated when detected at an early stage. However, if treatment is delayed, it can turn into more serious gum diseases and even cause tooth loss.

What are the Symptoms?

Gum inflammation is often painless. This makes the disease difficult to detect. However, some symptoms may be a sign of this condition:

Bleeding while brushing or flossing

Redness, swelling and tenderness in the gums

Teeth appearing longer (gingival recession)

Bad taste in the mouth or constant bad breath

Visible plaque or tartar accumulation around the gums

If you have even one of these symptoms, you should visit your dentist.

Why does it occur?

The main cause of gingivitis is inadequate oral hygiene. However, other factors can also increase the risk:

Not brushing your teeth regularly: Predisposes to the formation of plaque.

Use of tobacco products: Weakens the structure of the gums.

Hormonal imbalances: Especially effective during adolescence, pregnancy and menopause.

Nutritional deficiencies: Especially vitamin C deficiency triggers inflammation.

Diabetes: Increases the risk of infection by affecting the immune system.

Dry-mouth medications: Reduces the defense power of the gums.

Stress: Suppresses the body’s immune system and paves the way for inflammation.

What is Gum Inflammation? Symptoms, Causes and Treatment Methods

How is Gingivitis Treated?

Treatment for this condition is usually fast and effective. If treatment is started early, gum health can be completely restored.

1. Dental Scaling

Your dentist cleans plaque and tartar deposits with special tools. This process helps the gums become healthy again.

2. Daily Oral Care

Treatment does not end only in the clinic. Regular and correct oral care should be done at home. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, and supported with dental floss and mouthwash.

3. Adjusting Life Habits

Quitting smoking, eating a balanced diet and staying away from stress accelerate the healing process. In addition, regular doctor check-ups should not be neglected.

4. Advanced Interventions

In some cases, deeper cleaning (curettage) may be required to reach under the gum. Laser treatments or surgical interventions can also be applied.

What Should Be Done to Protect Yourself?

It is not difficult to prevent gingivitis. You can have healthy gums by following these simple but effective steps:

Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

Don’t forget to floss every day.

Stay away from sugary and acidic foods.

Get professional dental cleanings at least twice a year.

Stay away from cigarettes and tobacco products.

In conclusion, if gingivitis is detected early, it can be easily controlled. Otherwise, you may face serious oral health problems. Don’t neglect your oral care for a healthy smile and don’t forget to see your dentist regularly.
