Orthodontics Good to know
• The need for orthodontic treatment can only be determined by the dentist or orthodontist.
• Orthodontic treatment should be applied in cases such as unbalanced face and jaw structure, no contact of upper and lower teeth or excessive intertwining.
• Even though orthodontic treatments should start at a young age in order to receive positive results for the patient and the physician, orthodontic treatment can also be applied to adult people.
• The duration of orthodontic treatments can vary between 6 months to 24 months.
• Metal brackets, porcelain (transparent) brackets, lingual brackets and transparent plaques are the types of the braces.
The duration of orthodontic treatment varies according to the orthodontic treatment procedure and the patient’s orthodontic problem. Orthodontic treatment is continued until the desired result is achieved and takes about one year on average. However, depending on the biological structures of some individuals, the severity of the problem, and the health of their teeth and jawbones, this period can exceed 2 years.
It would not be correct to give an exact age range for orthodontic treatment. However, orthodontic treatment is often not possible at a very young age because tooth formation has not been completed yet.
The earlier the conditions that require orthodontic treatment are detected, the more successful the treatment process and the results are. That is why regular dental check-ups are recommended starting from the age of 7. Conditions such as anterior crossbite, protrusion of the anterior teeth, and narrowness in the upper jaw are problems that can manifest themselves at this age. Of course, starting orthodontic treatment at a young age is advantageous in many ways, however, nowadays, orthodontic treatment is frequently applied also in adult patients and successful results are obtained.
Braces and brackets applied during the orthodontic treatment process do not promote tooth decay, however patients with fixed braces need to give more importance to dental hygiene than ever before. Braces stay in the mouth for a long time and cavities can occur if necessary importance is not given to oral hygiene. This is not valid for removable orthodontic treatment. The appliances are easily cleaned as they can be removed.
The patient does not feel any pain during the installation of braces to the teeth, however, an adaptation period of 7 to 10 days after the braces are installed will take place. Some discomfort might be felt during this period due to friction caused by lip and cheek movements while speaking, eating, smiling. After a short time, the lips and cheeks get used to the braces and brackets and this possible sensitivity ends.
The probability of tooth deterioration after orthodontic treatment varies depending on the condition of the teeth before treatment and the type of problem. For example, in the case of a split tooth problem, the teeth can separate again after the treatment, while the probability of recurrence is very low in cases such as crossbite. There are some precautionary treatments that prevent teeth from returning to their original state. When these treatments called “retainers” or “reinforcements” are applied, the result can be permanent. The aim in the active treatment process of orthodontic treatment, which is divided into active treatment and passive treatment, is to reinforce the main treatment during the passive treatment process while the teeth are being relocated and fix their position.
