What Are the Best Methods for Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular procedures in cosmetic dentistry. It makes your smile look more attractive and healthy. Teeth whitening methods vary based on techniques and application methods. Home teeth whitening, in-office teeth whitening, combined teeth whitening, and internal whitening methods are the most commonly used. Here’s what you need to know about these methods:

Home Teeth Whitening Method

The home teeth whitening method is carried out using custom-made whitening trays based on measurements taken from the mouth. Whitening gel is applied inside these trays, which are then worn for a specified period. By using these trays for the duration recommended by your dentist, you can achieve the desired whiteness for your teeth.

In-Office Teeth Whitening Method

Also known as laser teeth whitening, this method is performed by a dentist in the clinic. Whitening gel is applied to the teeth and activated using UV light or laser. On average, your teeth can be whitened within an hour. This method yields results more quickly than other whitening methods.

Combined Teeth Whitening Method

Combined teeth whitening is applied to individuals who are not satisfied with the overall color of their teeth. In this method, the tooth color is lightened by a few shades using oxygenation. More effective results can be obtained by combining home and in-office methods.

Internal Whitening Method

This method is applied to teeth that have changed color following a root canal treatment. In this method, the filling inside the tooth is removed, and whitening gel is applied to the opened cavity. The tooth is temporarily filled, and the sessions are repeated at 3-day intervals.

Does Whitening Damage the Tooth Structure?

Whitening procedures performed under the supervision of dentists do not harm or cause permanent damage to the teeth. Before whitening, gum problems are treated, and tartar is cleaned. Thus, a beneficial procedure for dental health is carried out.

How Long Before Teeth Become Yellow Again?

After the whitening procedure, teeth may return to their original color over a certain period. This duration varies depending on the tooth structure and the quality of the materials used. In some individuals, it can be 3 to 6 months, while in others, it can last over a year.

Does Teeth Whitening Thin the Enamel?

There is no evidence that teeth whitening thins the enamel or causes structural damage. The important thing is that the procedure is done under the supervision of a dentist and at the correct concentration.

Does Sensitivity Occur After Teeth Whitening (Bleaching)?

Sensitivity can occur after teeth whitening. This sensitivity is usually temporary and disappears within 48 hours. If sensitivity occurs, pain relief can be used upon the recommendation of a dentist. If there is sensitivity before whitening, it is important to inform the dentist.
