Tooth loss can cause both aesthetic and functional issues. Dental implants are one of the most permanent and reliable treatment methods that restore natural tooth function by replacing missing teeth. So, how is a dental implant done, what are its stages, and how does the treatment process work? Here are the details…
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a treatment method that consists of artificial tooth roots made of titanium screws placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. These screws integrate with the jawbone, functioning like a natural tooth root, and porcelain or zirconium veneers are placed on top to create a permanent tooth.
How Is a Dental Implant Done? What Are the Stages?
Dental implant treatment is customized according to the patient’s jaw structure and needs. However, it is generally completed in four main stages:
1. Examination and Treatment Planning
The first step of implant treatment is a detailed examination process.
✔ Panoramic X-rays and 3D tomography are used to assess the jawbone structure.
✔ If the jawbone is insufficient, bone grafting or sinus lifting may be required.
✔ A personalized implant treatment plan is created, determining the most suitable implant type.
2. Implant Placement (Surgical Stage)
This phase of treatment is performed painlessly under local anesthesia:
✔ The gum is opened to prepare the implant site.
✔ A titanium implant screw is placed into the jawbone.
✔ The gum is stitched back, and the healing process begins to allow the implant to integrate with the bone.
The procedure typically takes 20-30 minutes per implant. Multiple implants can be placed in the same session.
3. Healing Process and Osseointegration
A certain healing period is required for the implant to fully integrate with the jawbone:
✔ This process usually takes between 2 to 6 months.
✔ The implant fuses with the jawbone, forming a solid structure.
✔ If the patient’s bone structure is strong and suitable, in some cases, an implant and a temporary prosthesis can be placed on the same day (Immediate Loading Implant).
4. Placement of the Prosthetic Tooth (Crown or Veneer)
✔ Once the implant has fully integrated with the bone, the gum is reopened, and a healing cap (abutment) is attached.
✔ The patient’s tooth impression is taken to prepare porcelain or zirconium veneers.
✔ The prosthetic tooth is placed onto the implant, completing the treatment.

What Should Be Considered After Implant Surgery?
✔ Avoid extremely hot or cold foods for the first 24 hours.
✔ Smoking and alcohol consumption can negatively affect the healing process.
✔ Maintain proper oral hygiene.
✔ Do not skip regular dental check-ups.
How Long Does the Implant Treatment Process Take?
Depending on the patient’s dental structure and additional procedures required, the full implant process can take between 3 to 6 months. However, for some patients, the “Immediate Loading Implant” technique allows the placement of an implant and a temporary prosthesis on the same day.
